POLIO FREE WORLD & ROTARY

WHAT IS POLIO?

Poliomyelitis, commonly shortened to polio, is an infectious disease caused by the poliovirus.

WHO IS AFFECTED: Unless we eradicate polio, within 10 years, as many as 200,000 new cases could occur around the world each year. Most commonly affects children under the age of 5.

RESULT: To become physically disabled and muscle weakness which caused inability to move.

SOLUTION: There is no cure, but polio is preventable with a vaccine.

MILESTONE OF POLIO WORLD

1894: The first major documented polio outbreak in the United States occurs in Vermont; 18 deaths and 132 cases of permanent paralysis are reported.

1908: 2 physicians in Vienna, Karl Landsteiner and Erwin Popper, discover that polio is caused by a virus.

1955: A vaccine developed by Dr. Jonas Salk is declared “safe and effective

1960: The U.S. government licenses the oral polio vaccine developed by Dr. Albert Sabin.

1979: Rotary International begins its fight against polio with a multi-year project to immunize 6 million children in the Philippines.

1985: Rotary International launches PolioPlus, the first and largest internationally coordinated private-sector support of a public health initiative, with an initial fundraising target of US$120 million.

1988: Rotary International and the World Health Organization launch the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. There are an estimated 350,000 cases of polio in 125 countries. Only Canada, Australia & Major parts of USA was polio free and remaining world was affected.

2006: The number of polio-endemic countries drops to 4 - Afghanistan, India, Nigeria, Pakistan.

2011: Rotary welcomes celebrities and other major public figures into a new public awareness campaign and ambassador program called "This Close" to ending polio. 

WHAT DID ROTARY FOR POLIO ERADICATION?

By working together with Rotary partners :UNICEF, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) World Health Organization (WHO), the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation &  governments, and communities around the world, we’ve immunized over 2.5 billion children in 122 countries.

Rotary members have contributed more than $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect nearly 3 billion children in 122 countries from this paralyzing disease. Rotary’s advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by governments to contribute more than $10 billion to the effort.

Rotary uses its members’ skills and passion to build awareness, fundraise, and encourage governments to donate to and support polio eradication efforts. Over 1.2 million Rotary members have volunteered their time and resources to help end polio.

HOW YOUR CONTRIBUTION IS CONNECTED WITH END POLIO CAMPAIGN:

Awareness Campaign:Your skills and passion to build awareness, fundraise, and encourage governments to donate to and support polio eradication efforts.

B&M Gates Foundation shall give $ 2 if you contribute $1 to polio fund ($50 million per annum).

WHY ZERO MATTERS:

Polio cases have been reduced by 99.9% worldwide since 1988, but it is critical for us to continue our efforts to eradicate the disease for good. Only 140 cases have been found in the last year.

REQUEST TO EACH ROTARIAN:

Please contribute only Average cost $3 (BDT 250) to fully protect a child against polio.

POLIO DAY 2021: “One Day. One Focus: Ending Polio – delivering on our promise of a polio-free world!”Join us for World Polio Day as global health experts and partners share our progress on the road to polio eradication. World Polio Day is held on October 24 in celebration of the birth of Jonas Salk, the American researcher who developed the first polio vaccine in 1955.
